The True Story of RED DESIRE
Whenever I see RED, the colour, or feel a strong desire well up in me, I think of RED. The connotation relates to RED hot moments of love. Warmth with memories of beginnings in the womb. Flesh and blood. Desires fulfilled in red glowing hues.
I’ve spent time in Morocco with my dearest friend Michael Cotten, who ultimately inspired the music on this track with his field recordings of ceremonial singing. And love, knowledge and dedication to Middle Eastern and North African music and traditions. Percussion tracks with doumbek, metal clappers, bongos and flutes are all represented in RED DESIRE.
Michael art directed the accompanied video with North African imagery, along with my live drumming on trap set captured in our recording studio.
The mysterious suite begins like a Saharan safari colliding into an oasis of chaotic improvisation, accompanied by wails from friend and former Tube, Vince Welnick. Climaxing with an Egyptian orgy of psychedelic phrasing. Zeppelin-like grooves homage Kashmir, along with ripping guitar solos by Steve Conte of Bronx fame. The underlying bed of sound was created and developed by Chris von Sneidern. Guided by cello played by my niece, Tia Luminosa Raimond Jones. Accompanied by Gregor Huebner, stroking and plucking his violin. Diana Mangano chants and sings the long, leaning notes and lets them float. Tom Ayres and Atom Ellis supply guitar and bass to the origin and foundation of the music that all else was collaborated upon.
I give my best impression of Peter O’Toole from the movie Lawrence of Arabia, with an utmost bleeding-RED-heart prose delivery. The Scarlet Letter reference was an actual occurrence when I once received an envelope containing dried blood from an unknown admirer, never to be revealed. The Devil’s RED Wife, aaahhhhh.

The True Story of Orange Joy
Since the beginning of my awareness of colour, I’ve always preferred the colour Orange over Yellow. Not that I don’t have respect for Yellow as a colour (see and hear ‘Yellow Excitement’ track 4 on my up-and-coming album, Prairie Prince’s Colours and Passions). In an early colouring book assignment, my teacher requested a box that held Jack to be coloured Yellow; I filled the square Orange and was reprimanded for not following directions. I’ve had a mental block about the incident ever since. Orange gave me a sense of Joy and warmth that has also never left me in my love for Latin music that evokes the sun’s hues and heat of its rhythms. With this track my intention was to imagine being in a place so serene and lovely, relaxing on a shore in a hammock somewhere under a canopy of fronds, making love to a slow steady Bossa groove. Suddenly accelerating in tempo and building in intensity, with inclusion of a new joyful location such as a theme park, turning the mellow rhythmic passion into rubato time, encouraging mucho hip movement in a burst of joy. The third section of the suite segues into a cranking bateria viva allegro timbale finale and ultimate Joy. The track began by recording vocals and background vocals to my traps and percussion. Michael Cotten joined the project with amazing keyboard and sample contributions. Mike has also created and directed the video for Orange Joy. Next collaborations were Ross Valory from the band Journey, on bass guitar, and Eric Levy from Night Ranger, on keyboards and synthesizers. Ross delivered a vocal tribute to Paul Lynde (Wonderful!) David James of The Beth Custer Ensemble, and Diana Mangano from Jefferson Starship, recorded keyboard, bass, and guitar, along with the choral background vocals in Spanish and joyful laughter. My pop, Charlie Prince, can be heard laughing and expounding with pride and joy on this musical roller-coaster ride. Lastly, Chris von Sneidern plays acoustic guitar throughout the track and ends with a final scorching Santana-esque guitar solo and hit it out of the park! We combined our art expertise and worked with The Tubes choreographer Kenny Ortega to collaborate as the artistic team responsible for devising the production design and theatrical staging for The Tubes live shows and videos. We also designed the album covers and graphic design for our band, The Tubes. View Cotten/Prince t-shirt designs >
We came up with a style and air-brush technique which allowed us to design and paint some of the world’s largest murals. One of our most famous murals was the “Flying Records” on the exterior of the A&M Records building in Hollywood, Ca. Other iconic murals include “Crashing Waves” on San Francisco’s Cliff House and the interior of at Rockefeller Center in New York City.
Our artistic vision and ability to produce innovative and artistic projects led to working for the world’s top live performers, high-end retailers and companies around the world. Working with long time collaborator Kenny Ortega we created set and stage design for some of the world’s biggest musical touring acts (Michael Jackson, Shania Twain, Bonnie Raitt, Gloria Estefan, Bette Midler, The Tubes and Todd Rundgren).
We also collaborated on the Closing Ceremonies of the 1996 Olympic Games and the Super Bowl XXX Half-Time Show, starring Diana Ross, Michael Jackson’s 1997 “History” tour and “This Is It.”
We painted murals across the United States for companies including I Magnin, Macy’s, The Limited, Federated Stores. International clients commissioned murals in Spain, England, Italy, Germany, Mexico, Sweden and Japan. Other major mural commissions include grand scale interiors at the Ho-Chunk Casino and the Potawatomi Casino in Wisconsin. The late Vince Welnick (Grateful Dead, The Tubes) commissioned us to paint murals in his Mexican villa – Casa Del Sol – in Akumal on the Maya Riviera.
